Healthcare on the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man has its own health service, Manx Care, separate from (but modelled on) the UK NHS. Services are generally free at the point of use for residents.

Registering with a GP

  • You must register with a GP practice to access healthcare
  • Choose any practice that covers your area — most accept new patients
  • Bring proof of address and photo ID
  • GP consultations are free for residents

GP Surgeries

Major practices include:

  • Douglas: Finch Hill, Peel Road, Lord Street, Broadway
  • Onchan: Onchan Medical Centre
  • Ramsey: Ramsey Group Practice
  • Peel: Peel Medical Centre
  • Castletown: Southern Group Practice

Hospitals

  • Nobles Hospital, Douglas — Main hospital, A&E, surgery, maternity, all specialisms. Tel: 650000

  • Specialist treatment: Some specialist care is provided off-island (usually Liverpool or Manchester). Manx Care arranges and funds travel.

Dentists

Dental services are mixed public/private. Health Service dental care has charges (similar to UK NHS dental charges). Some practices are fully private.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies in Douglas, Onchan, Ramsey, Peel and other towns. Prescriptions are charged at a flat rate (similar to the UK prescription charge). Some exemptions apply.

UK Visitors: Reciprocal healthcare agreements mean UK residents can access emergency treatment on the IoM. However, the IoM is NOT part of the UK NHS — travel insurance is recommended for non-emergency care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are prescriptions free on the Isle of Man?

No. There is a prescription charge similar to the UK (approximately £5-6 per item, check current rate). Exemptions apply for children, over-65s, pregnant women, and those with certain medical conditions or low income.

Can I use my UK NHS number on the Isle of Man?

No. The IoM health service is separate from the UK NHS. You need to register as a new patient with an IoM GP. Your UK medical records can be transferred over.
