Environment, Food & Agriculture (DEFA)
DEFA is responsible for the island's environment, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and wildlife.
Fishing
- Sea fishing: No licence required for recreational sea fishing from shore or boat
- Freshwater fishing: A licence is required. Purchase from DEFA or local post offices.
- Scallop/crab/lobster: Commercial licences required. Recreational pot limits apply.
Countryside Access
- The IoM has extensive public footpaths and rights of way
- Raad ny Foillan (Road of the Gull) — 100-mile coastal footpath around the entire island
- Millennium Way — 28-mile north-south heritage trail
- Open hill land is generally accessible, but farmland requires permission
Agriculture
- DEFA provides grants and support for IoM farmers
- Agricultural Development Scheme — financial support for farm improvements
- Countryside Care Scheme — payments for environmental land management
Environmental Permits
